Jack Stokes

Best person statement

I’m Jack Stokes, I’m the best person to be your President because I have a deep understanding of student’s needs, and I have the experience needed from serving on the Leadership Team for 4 years and being your President over the past year, I have not only modernised your Union making it stronger but I have also increased its budget to run more campaigns and offer more services, events and clubs.

You should vote for me to be your President because I have consistently fought for all students at Dudley and will continue to fight for you with every ounce of determination and passion you deserve.

I have proven I can deliver for students; I successfully campaigned to keep bus passes free for all 16-18 students, introduced free HIV testing across all major campuses, made your Union a leading voice in national campaigns and created brand new Leadership roles and structures targeted to your specific needs.

I have gained strong working relationships with management and developed national connections which will be crucial in securing student victories. I have represented you on the national stage by being a key part of national campaigns and speaking in Parliament.

As your President, I promise to address the root causes of your challenges head-on, not just scratching the surface but diving into the core issues to enact real change.

Statement of intent if elected

My name is Jack Stokes, I've had 4 years of experience fighting for students locally and nationally and I have dedicated the past year as your President. I am re-running to be your President because I have a proven track record of delivering for students and I believe in ensuring your voices are heard and your needs are met. As your President I will work tirelessly to address the issues you face. Here are the key points I will prioritise if I’m re-elected:

No.1 Combating the Cost-of-Living and Mental Health Crises’

In these challenging times, no student should have to choose between heating and eating. It's unacceptable that rising mental health issues and financial struggles are affecting your education. I will establish strong community-based mental health resources and push for increased investment in counselling and NHS services taking a holistic approach. I will fight for free, reliable, and accessible public transport for all students. Additionally, I will lobby for the expansion of the free college meal program to address food insecurity.

No.2 Building Strong Communities

I will make it easier to start clubs and increase funding to support their growth. I will advocate for and develop student social spaces where students can relax, study, and socialise. I will enhance skill development opportunities by improving SU volunteer structures and implementing a recognition program for your community contributions. I will make SU communications more accessible through an improved website and better use of social media, master teams, and digital screens. I aim to unite students across the West Midlands to campaign on local and regional issues. We can achieve a free, accessible, and inclusive education system for everyone.

No.3 Fighting for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Our college should be a place where everyone feels welcome and included. In a world where inclusivity is under threat, we must push forward. I will collaborate with student groups to tackle issues, campaign for liberation, and celebrate our diverse community. I will advocate for inclusive policies and support marginalised communities, fighting against hate in all its forms. This includes lobbying to ban conversion therapy for everyone. We must break down barriers and create a truly inclusive, free, and liberated society.

No.4 Education Designed for Students

Current education reforms prioritise companies over students. Education should be flexible and offer choices that reflect diverse talents, interests, and career aspirations. Cutting BTECs and other pathways limits opportunities and forces students into unsuitable routes. I will push for an education system that offers multiple pathways, empowering students to choose the path that aligns with their strengths and passions. This approach will foster a more inclusive learning environment. I will lobby for a society that’s has democracy at its heart.

As your President, I promise to tackle the root causes of your challenges. I will work tirelessly to bring about real change, not just surface-level solutions. It's time to fix our broken society, fulfil our promises, and repair our education system.
