Best Person Statement

I believe I would be the best person for this job because I am passionate about making a difference to people’s lives. I want to speak out for students, and believe that I have all the skills necessary to represent the student body, work productively with staff, and communicate with people and organisations outside of the college.

I have a longstanding interest in politics and current affairs, both locally and nationally. This means that I can listen closely to all sides of a debate, am open to discussion, and have a strong sense of how leaders have to balance different priorities.

I’m also a great team player. I am an active member of a local church, which has given me of experience of dealing with people of all ages and backgrounds. Alongside other members of my church, I have recently been a part of setting up and leading a youth discussion group. This has given me an understanding of safeguarding, effective communication and organisation, and promoting meetings and events.

My ability to encourage engagement is also reflected in the large social media presence that I have built from scratch. Currently, I have over 600k followers, which helped me to develop a small drop shipping business. Therefore, I can easily funnel these creative skills into promoting the events and activities of the Student Union and ensure that students know what we’re doing and how they can be a part of it.

Manifesto

My name is Joel Hyde. But don’t hide from your duty to vote for the future of Dudley College! Because I want to be your President of the Students’ Union. Below are my policies and promises to you:

Maintaining a Quality Student Experience

I am dedicated to ensuring that each and every student has the best possible experience while studying at Dudley College. This means that under my watch, I will promote financial support available to students and ensure this is communicated clearly. It also means that I will fight for the price of food, both in the canteens and vending machines, to be reduced. It is only fair for food to be kept in line with the income of the average student.

Jumpstarting Students’ Careers

I also want students to feel confident about their futures. I will arrange for local and national employers to visit the college in a range of events. Dudley College has hundreds of young people who would be an asset to the local job market, and I intend to give us all as many opportunities as possible to engage with employers and training providers. It should be known that the College is a hub of hardworking and skilled future employees.

Skills For Life

As a further part of preparing students for the future, I will create workshops and events that educate students in the everyday life skills that they need for the adult world.

Firstly, I will invite local banks and building societies to support, discuss, and educate the student body on money management and budgeting. I believe that these are life long essential skills for everyone regardless of whether they’re heading to further education, employment, or even starting their own business.

I will also be looking to work in conjunction with local supermarkets to educate and promote not only healthy eating but the ability to be able to learn how to cook and provide for yourself within a budget. While debt and poor lifestyle choices can have crushing effects upon mental health and general wellbeing, being equipped for the world from College creates a stability that could last for a lifetime.

Vote!

While I am keen to represent all of the different campuses of Dudley College, I find it amazing that no member of Dudley Sixth has even been President of the Students’ Union. As a proud member of the sixth form, I would love to act as their voice and push for further representation for them.

More than anything else, however, I am looking to be a president of the Students’ Union who is a voice of the people. I want to be approached and challenged by students, working for them towards goals that they want to see achieved.
