SU Presidential Election

The Students' Union is a student-led organisation dedicated to serving the students of Dudley College and Sixth.

We believe in empowering our fellow students to become leaders in their community. That's why we hold annual elections where you can stand to become a leader of the Union.

For more information on the President position, we offer one-to-one info sessions through MS Teams. Message Sophia Daly or email her at sophia.daly@dudleycol.ac.uk. We strongly encourage you to take a chance on this fantastic opportunity and find out what the SU can offer you.

To run for the election, you are required to write a manifesto outlining your ideas, campaigns, and projects that you plan to implement if elected.

We understand that writing a manifesto can be challenging, but don't worry! We have prepared some tips to help you get started.

The elections are organised so that any student can stand for election and vote for who they want to see represent them throughout the year. The elected student will then lead the SU on behalf of every member of the Union and coordinate our work and direction.

I believe that each college should reduce its electronic waste by giving old and unused laptops to students who do not have access to one at home. This would give everyone a better chance of passing the course they are currently enrolled in, as they would be able to complete work at home instead of having to stay late or find extra time at college. This would also help close the digital divide.

I also believe that there should be more support for SEND students who currently do not receive the in-class support or supplies they are entitled to. This could be achieved by lobbying college staff to employ more teaching assistants and support staff for individuals, as well as creating a committee for SEND students so their voices can be heard by the college and to ensure that proper support is being maintained.

I also believe that there should be more after-college activities and events for students to attend in order to improve mental health and wellbeing. These activities would also give students the opportunity to make new friends who share similar interests.

1.Mental Health Awareness: I want to increase awareness of mental health across the college by introducing trained Student Wellbeing Ambassadors at each campus site. These ambassadors would be available in open social spaces to guide students to safe spaces or counsellors when needed. This would also help students better understand what mental health challenges may look like and how to support one another.

2.Supporting the Cost of Living: As living costs continue to rise, many students are struggling to afford everyday necessities. I would like to work with local businesses in Dudley Town Centre and Brierley Hill to increase student discounts in a wider range of shops, helping make daily life more affordable for students. I would also like to introduce a student trade shop at Broadway or Evolve, where students can donate or exchange materials and equipment they no longer need. This could help students save money while also encouraging them to meet new people and build connections.

3.Communication: I aim to improve communication between teachers and students by ensuring that student concerns are listened to and taken seriously. There should be clearer communication about the support available so students know where to go when they need help. I would also encourage classroom ground rules that both students and teachers can agree on, helping to build mutual respect. In addition, I would introduce a student feedback box where students can anonymously and confidently share their opinions and concerns about classroom experiences, helping to create positive change and stronger relationships between teachers and students.

Elections Guide

The Students' Union is a student-led organisation that represents Dudley College students. To do this, we hold elections to choose students for key roles that will best represent you.

There are three main stages to the elections:
Nominations – Any student can nominate themselves for one of our roles.
Ratification – Candidates who have nominated themselves attend a meeting to learn about the rules and confirm their eligibility. After this, they prepare their campaign.
Voting – All students can vote on the Union online or in person at a static or floating ballot box. Candidates will campaign to get as many votes as possible.

If you have any official questions or need help, message Sophia Daly on MS Teams.

What is the Job?

Dudley Students' Union has a paid Sabbatical President elected each year to represent the views of every single student across Dudley College.

The SU President is in charge of overseeing pretty much everything that goes on in the organisation.

Aims of the Post:

  • Be the Head of the SU Leadership Team, ensuring the strategic direction and objectives are met and provide clear, consistent leadership for the Union.

  • Lead on campaigns that tackle the issues students are facing locally and nationally whilst being the key spokesperson for the Union.
  • Represent and engage with students across all Dudley College campuses.

Manifesto Tips

Guide to Writing an Effective Election Manifesto

The election season is upon us, and we're excited to see students step up and run for various positions. As a candidate, it's important to create a compelling manifesto that clearly outlines your goals and vision for the role you're running for.

Your election manifesto is a statement that communicates your plans and ideas for the role you're running for. It should be concise, easy to read, and realistic. Here are some tips:
- Be concise and use clear language.
- Outline your previous experience and how it will help you in the role.
- Set realistic and achievable goals for your time in office.
- Highlight the skills and qualities that make you the best candidate for the role.

Manifesto Template:

1. What do you hope to achieve in the role if you're elected?
- Objective 1: Hold new events to increase outreach.
- Objective 2: Increase social activities with weekly events.
- Objective 3: Seek sponsorship opportunities to increase funding.

Re-Open Nominations

In all of our elections, we have a candidate called RON (Re-Open Nominations). Think of it as a way to vote against any of the candidates running for a post. By choosing RON you're saying that you don't think the candidate(s) are suitable and would like to re-start the elections with different people.

If RON wins, the election will be re-run and the candidates who were running will not be allowed to re-submit a nomination to run again.

Voting closes on 25th May at 5:00 PM.
