Gender Expression Fund

Why was it set up?

The Union recognises the potential financial burden that can be faced by students undergoing any level of gender identity transition. To ensure students can live as their most authentic self, regardless of their economic background, we have created this fund to allow students of any means to buy items that most match their identity.

What can I buy with this fund?

This fund is available for the purchase of items that can help trans students (trans being used as an umbrella term including non-binary and other non-cisgender identities) live as their true self. Eligible items include:

  • Chest binders
  • Packers
  • Tucking underwear
  • Makeup
  • Clothes that align best with a trans person’s identity
  • Payment for a registered deed poll

This fund does not cover long-term therapy, medical treatments, or transport costs.

Who is eligible?

To access the fund, you must:

  • Be a currently registered student at Dudley College of Technology and a member of Dudley College Students' Union.
  • Identify as trans, including but not limited to transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse/questioning identities.

How do I access the fund?

If you wish to apply for financial support, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page. Your application will be reviewed, and the outcome will be communicated to you via Teams.

How much funding can I access?

Dudley SU will provide a maximum of £50 per applicant. Any additional costs will need to be covered by you. Once the allocated funds have been exhausted, all applications will be suspended until further notice.

I’ve submitted my application, what happens next?

Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by our staff team. They will check that the requested items align with the fund’s intended purpose. You may be contacted for further details, such as considering purchasing two binders for hygiene reasons.

You will never be asked to ‘prove’ your gender or disclose personal details beyond what is required in the form. Once approved, you will be notified, and funds will be disbursed shortly. If your application is denied, we will inform you of the reason.
